Once the art of maintaining a meditative posture has been mastered, the next phase entails the art of governing the movement of the Prana. Thus, we embark upon the profound meditative practice of Pranayama, which involves regulating the body's vital life forces. It is important to note that Prana, often erroneously equated with the mere breath, is, in fact, the embodiment of the boundless cosmic energy. It permeates every fiber of our being, and its most conspicuous manifestation can be observed in the rhythmic expansion and contraction of the lungs. The omnipresent Prana orchestrates this harmonious motion as it draws in the very breath we endeavor to command through the practice of Pranayama. By skillfully harnessing and mastering the breath, we effortlessly gain dominion over the Prana, thus attaining a state of profound control through the guidance of meditation.
Prana, the essence of vitality, bestows upon us the ability to gracefully engage in the symphony of physical endeavors, encompassing the rhythmic dance of breath, the harmonious symphony of digestion, and the graceful circulation flow. Beyond its role in sustaining our corporeal existence, prana serves as an ethereal bridge, seamlessly connecting the realms of the mind and body. Through the art of pranayama, one can delicately manipulate the cadence of breath and the intervals between each inhalation and exhalation, thereby exerting a profound influence upon the very fabric of the mind.
The art of Pranayama involves the continuous mastery of regulating the essential energies within oneself.
Patanjali Yoga: Chapter 2 / 50
Pranayama’s three sorts of motion are one by which we draw the breath in, another by which we throw it out, and the third act is when the breath is held in the lungs or stopped from entering the lungs. These, again, are varied by place and time.
Here, The place means The Prana is held to some particular body part. By the time indicates how long the Prana should be confined to a specific area, we are told how many seconds to keep one motion and how many seconds to keep another.
Commentary on Sri Patanjali Yoga sutra by Swami Vivekananda
This is the fourth sort of Pranayama, in which the Kumbhak is brought about by long practice attended with reflection, which is absent in the other three.
